Funded by banker Pau Gil and designed by famed Modernist architect Lluis Domenech i Montaner in 1902, the construction of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau took almost 30 years to complete. It shows the use of intricate patterns and mosaics inspired by Arabic architecture, whilst maintaining the curves and lines of the Art Nouveau style current at the time. Domenech i Montaner embraced open spaces and symmetry, unlike his famous student, architect Antoni Gaudi,

Today the former hospital stands as one of the city’s most famed works of architecture, and together with his Palau de la Musica as two of his works designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
